Heysen Gallery |
The Heysen Gallery and Cutural Precinct will create an artistic hub for the Adelaide Hills, for the primary display of the work of renowned painters Hans and Nora Heysen.
The building will include gallery spaces as well as a restaurant and function space, art storage, administration facilities and a maker space.
It will celebrate Heysen's connection with nature and the Adelaide Hills landscape and allow for a reinvigorated and immersive reading of the work of renowned artists Hans Heysen, and daughter Nora Heysen.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 15 May 2024
The new Heysen Gallery project achieved planning consent at the Mount Barker Council Assessment Panel on Wednesday 15 May.
Plans for an art gallery at The Cedars in Hahndorf, South Australia, have been refined by design and town planning practice Beyond Ink to deliver a multipurpose building to house and protect the artistic works of Hans and Nora Heysen.
Beyond Ink Principal John Ashcroft said: "The Cedars and their collection of artworks is of great cultural and historical significance, and we are proud to be able to contribute to this new space which provides for the stewardship of the Heysen legacy".
The variation application was managed by Beyond Ink Senior Town Planner Sonia Gallarello, who described the process as a smooth collaboration with Council staff and State Heritage, adding that "We are excited by the outcome from the CAP meeting and we look forward to seeing the project draw closer to fruition." Gallarello noted that the variation is similar to the original application granted consent 12 months ago but with a reduction in built form and scale, with no changes to the carpark or further loss of vegetation.
Reflecting on previous versions of the project, Beyond Ink evolved the design to balance the operational needs of a modern gallery with the requirements of the venue's largely volunteer staff. Reducing the building's size has enabled a more manageable operating footprint for the gallery, whilst responding to the current financial realities of the construction environment.
Senior designer Scott Robinson said "The gallery will foster an immersive exploration of both the artistic oeuvre of Hans and Nora Heysen, and the unique scenic beauty of The Cedars. Derived from the natural environment, the earthy tones and rich timber elements of the design mirror the majestic gum trees that served as a prominent feature in Hans Heysen's work. The design is bold, yet firmly ingrained in the essence of the Adelaide Hills and the values of the Heysen family".
Chair for the Hans Heysen Foundation, James Sexton said "We are thrilled to have received this approval and we look forward to the completion of the gallery with the continuing valued assistance of Beyond Ink."
The Gallery is funded with a federal grant under the Adelaide City Deal.
