Victoria Park | Adelaide Street Circuit |
Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi is the largest segment of the Adelaide Park Lands located on the east side of Adelaide city.
Pakapakanthi is the Kaurna word for trotting, and refers to the former use of this park as a racecourse from 1846-2007. The park is characterised by an expansive internal open space affording significant views towards the Adelaide Hills and City.
Adelaide Street Circuit
Criterium Race Track | Adelaide Parklands Circuit
Shortened from its Grand Prix length by m to 3.2km this former Formula 1 circuit is renowned for being one of the best in the world. The circuit offers very little room for error and gives the drivers few opportunities to relax.
This 1.3km race track is predominantly used for cycling during the summer months and also makes up a significant part of the Clipsal 500 Circuit.
Regular users of the track include Cycling SA, Norwood Cycling Club, Skinny Lattes Cycling Club, International Pedal Prix, VLCC and SA Masters Cycling Association.
Getting There
The Adelaide Parkland Circuit is located at the Victoria Park Racecourse area of the city in South Australia.
The track is conventiently located to the east of the central business district and travel by public transport is recommended.
Free and regular shuttle buses to catch to and from the Adelaide Railway Station, while Clispal 500 ticket holders can travel for free to the event on any Adelaide Metro bus, tram or train service over all four days of the event.
Premium Sports Field & Heritage Grandstand
The premium Sports Field is located adjacent to the Heritage Grandstand in Victoria Park and is bordered by the Criterium Track. The field is approximately 120m x 85m has flood lighting and sleeves in place for Rugby League goal posts.
Southern Sports Fields
The Southern Sports Fields are located south of the Central Gardens within the Park and are made up of 3 cricket ovals with hard wickets in summer and 7 sports pitches and a football oval in winter. The sports predominantly played on the sports fields in winter are Rugby Union and Soccer.
Fitness Loop & Sweat Track
A 1.9km fitness loop situated in the park with 5 outdoor exercise stations placed along it. This loop is popular with
runners, walkers and dog walkers. The Sweat Track is located on the Park Lands Trail (ochre bitumen path) adjacent to East Terrace and includes several activity stations including hurdles, sit ups and lunges
Petanque Piste (peetank pissed)
The Petanque Piste is located adjacent to East Terrace a short walk from the Western entrance to the central gardens.
The petanque piste has a BBQ facility adjacent to it and can be used by the whole community.
History
Victoria Park was the first official racetrack in South Australia, the earliest meeting was held there in 1846. It was then simply known as the Eastern Parklands track, it was not until 1871 that it was officially named Victoria Park.
The Victoria Park Grandstand was constructed in 1882. Further developments followed with entrance gates, turnstile building, kiosk and an Adelaide Racing Club office building constructed through the early twentieth century.
