Adelaide Zoo

Adelaide Zoo is home to over 1,800 animals and almost 300 species of exotic and native mammals, birds, reptiles and fish exhibited in 8 hectares of magnificent botanic surroundings.

We focus on endangered and rare animals from continents which made up the super continent Gondwana - South America, India, Africa and Australia (also South East Asia). The Zoology and Botany of these continents show interesting similarities and are the regions represented in the Zoos major exhibits.

Owned and operated by the Royal Zoological Society of South Australia, we are the only major metropolitan Zoo in Australia to be owned and operated by a not for profit organisation and governed by a volunteer board on behalf of its members.

Giant Panda

Wang Wang and Fu Ni are Australia's only breeding pair of Giant Pandas.

Wang Wang (Net Net) was born on 31 August 2005 and Fu Ni (Lucky Girl) on 23 August 2006 both at Woolong Giant Panda Research Centre, China and moved to Adelaide Zoo together in November 2009.

Getting Here

Adelaide Zoo is situated on Frome Road, near the River Torrens.

By Car:
Limited ticket parking is available on Plane Tree Drive, War Memorial Drive and Frome Road. There is no parking available inside Adelaide Zoo.

By Bus:
Buses stop on Frome Road directly outside the Zoo (Bus number 271 or 273 from the Currie Street).

The hourly Connector Bus passes the Adelaide Oval and many of the UPark carparks in the city.

By Bike:
32 free bike racks are provided within the entry precinct, just outside the Santos Conservation Centre. Best routes to Adelaide Zoo include the Torrens Linear Park and cycle paths along all major arterial roads.

By Boat:
The Popeye boats are privately owned recreational ferries that operate on the lake between Elder Park and the Adelaide Zoo. You can purchase a one-way ticket from Elder Park and disembark from the river cruise at the Zoo. The Popeye operates more frequently in the school holidays.
