Zoot

Zoot rock band formed in Adelaide in 1964 as Down the Line and then changed their name to Zoot in 1967.

They had a top-five hit on the Go-Set national singles chart with a heavy rock cover of The Beatles' ballad "Eleanor Rigby" released in 1970, disbanded in May 1971.

They changed their name to Zoot on the recommendation of a young Doc Neeson.

The band included prominent Australian artists Beeb Birtles, who was later a founder of Little River Band in 1975, vocalist Darryl Cotton, and guitarist singer-songwriter, Rick Springfield, who moved to the United States in 1972, and went on to international fame as a solo artist, songwriter and actor ("Jessie's Girl", "General Hospital")

On 14 December 1970, the Zoot single "Eleanor Rigby" debuted on the Australian charts.

Their fuel-injected cover version of The Beatles' song, "Eleanor Rigby" was considered by many to be superior to the Beatles original. It went on to become their most popular single, peaking at #4 in March 1971. The song remained in the Top 40 for twenty weeks and reached #12 on the Top Records for the Year of 1971.
